Inspired by Ella Fitzgerald, Miriam Makeba, Fela Kuti, and Prince, Les Nubians released "Princesses Nubiennes" in 1998. The album entered the Billboard 200, a first for an album sung mostly in French. Led by the hit “Makeda,” the album helped shape the emerging Neo Soul movement.
